In addition to beefing up its grocery aisles, Target wants to enter the grocery delivery game. Amazon, Walmart, Fresh Direct, and Peapod are all doing it, so the bright red big-box store is only trying to keep up the pace.
Last year, after announcing the expansion of the chain's produce and non-perishable aisles with items like Greek yogurt and bottled craft beer, CEO Brian Cornell assured customers that he wouldn't flip Target into a full-fledged grocery store. Instead, he noted, the company is providing shoppers with more natural and organic products that they're apparently interested in—at affordable prices, of course, to keep in line with the brand's identity.
Yet Target's chief marketing officer, Jeff Jones, revealed that the company has plans to test a grocery delivery service "in the very near future," according to the Star Tribune. This could be an extension of what the brand calls "on-demand shopping," an anytime shopping program à la movie rentals on TV. Snacks brought to my door whenever I'd like? I can get down with that.
So far, the chain has only just started testing curbside pick-up of online orders at locations in San Francisco and New Jersey. There's no word on when exactly the full delivery option will debut; however Eddie Baeb, a Target spokesman, said the company hopes to have the initiative up and running before the holiday shopping season begins. Clock's ticking, Target.
