Why build a house out of something so boring as wood or brick and mortar when there are far more interesting—and environmentally-friendly—options around. Chinese architect Li Rongjun must have asked himself that question before building an office out of old beer bottles. Or maybe he was just wasted.
A project that's green in more ways than one, recent graduate Rongjun's 312 square-foot beer office is made up of 8,500 empty bottles and has two nine-foot stories. This is no simple shack. And despite being built from recycled materials (with a bottom floor made of mud and brick), the office was far from free. Rongjun's father toldChina Daily that the four-month project cost the equivalent of some $11,275 U.S. to build, though that's markedly less than traditional materials.
While the structure is intriguing and beautiful (especially at night), it is maybe not the safest thing. According to another architect, Tang Zhe, who talked to China Daily, the whole structure is in danger of collapsing. "The top level has no load bearing wall and the weight the beer bottles could carry is limited, thus the structure may collapse," he told the publication.
But while it still stands, the office is definitely an eye-catching feat and a pretty impressive project to complete straight out of school. Definitely more impressive than the standard college-graduation ritual of just drinking 8,500 beers and leaving it at that.
