Pizza lovers everywhere know that Naples, Italy, is the birthplace of pizza. And to this day, the city is cooking up some of the most delicious pizzas in the world. So imagine our surprise when 10 pizza restaurants from the U.S. made it onto Big 7 Travel's newly released 50 Best Pizzas in the World list.
Not only that, the U.S. picks are from all across the country, and not just the unofficial pizza capitals of New York City and Chicago. Among the U.S. based pizzerias to make it onto to the list are Ops in Brooklyn, New York; Pequod's in Chicago, Illinois; Pizza Delicious in New Orleans, Louisiana; and Pijja Palace in Los Angeles, California.
Pijja Palace is one of several additions to the list that leans heavily towards less traditional pies. On their menu, you'll find pizzas made with ingredients like green chile chutney, crunchy masala, and spinach and onion gravy.
And for those ready to break out their passport to indulge in what's reportedly the world's best pizza, you'll find it at 10 by Diego Vitagliano Pizzeria in Naples, Italy, which was the #1 pick.
"Naples is crammed full of award-winning pizzerias, but 10 by Diego Vitagliano offers something really special," reads a description for the pizzeria. "As well as a superb Margherita and Marinara, Vitagliano injects real culinary creativity into his more contemporary iterations, with pizzas like the Pistadella, made with Fiore di latte di agerola, mortadella and Sicilian pistachio pesto. The team here only use high quality seasonal ingredients and there isn’t a single pizza on the menu that will set you back more than €10."
