When a money-saving tip for Chipotle burritos went viral several weeks ago, the $3 hack was met with praise, criticism, and a bit of confusion. In the video, which was uploaded to TikTok in July, user @wyaleena showed viewers how to DIY a hearty burrito by ordering a single taco and adding a tortilla and a ton of extras on the side.
The comments section on the TikTok was filled with concern from those who were worried about Chipotle catching on to the trend. Well, that time has come.
Food & Wine reports that the option to order a single taco through Chipotle's online-ordering system is no longer available, rendering the $3 burrito hack useless. Customers looking to order a lone taco can still do so by visiting their local Chipotle in person.
A rep for the fast casual chain has confirmed that single tacos can no longer be ordered online as a result of the hack. They added that the potentially time-consuming hack has resulted in a "poor experience" for both Chipotle employees and customers.
"Guests are currently unable to order a single taco from our online ordering systems," Laurie Schalow, Chipotle's chief corporate affairs officer, shared with Food & Wine in an email. "While we have long embraced customizations and even released our own hack menu, the current social media trend is resulting in a poor experience for our food, our employees and our customers waiting for orders."
Fortunately, there are still plenty of other Chipotle ordering hacks that aren't nearly as controversial.
