Heads up, oat milk and cold brew lovers. Lyons Magnus, a company with over 150 years of experience in the food and beverage manufacturing industry, has recalled a number of its products due to the potential for microbial contamination. Among the products included in the voluntary recall of over 50 beverages are Oatly Oat-Milk Barista Edition, Stumptown Cold Brew Coffees, and various drinks from the brand Aloha. A company announcement from July 29 on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration website says that the recalled products did not meet commercial sterility specifications.
The microbial contamination in question includes the organism Cronobacter sakazakii. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Cronobacter is a germ that can be found in dry foods such as powdered milk and herbal teas.
Although a number of Cronobacter infections were linked to powdered infant formula earlier this year, the company stresses that the "list of recalled products does not include products intended for infants."
"While infection related to Cronobacter sakazakii is rare, the common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection. To date, no illnesses or complaints related to these products have been reported," the company announcement reads.
The FDA recommends that if you have any of the recalled products, you should dispose of them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If you want to check whether a product has ben recalled, you can visit the FDA website to view the brand name, lot code, best by date, and additional information for the recalled items.
