It's not every day that you come across an orange lobster: the chances are one in 30 million. But luck was recently on the side of a few Red Lobster employees in Hollywood, Florida, who found an orange lobster as they were unpacking a shipment of seafood.
Before you worry, don't fret; the rare lobster didn't end up on a Surf & Turf platter. Instead, the lobster was saved and sent to a new home at the Ripley’s Aquarium in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Workers at the Red Lobster in Hollywood gave the crustacean a fitting new name, Cheddar. In addition to its vibrant hue, the name serves as an ode to Red Lobster's iconic Cheddar Bay Biscuits.
"Sometimes ordinary miracles happen, and Cheddar is one of them,” said Mario Roque, a manager at Red Lobster who led the rescue of Cheddar. “A group of incredible people helped us make this possible. We are so honored to have been able to save Cheddar and find her a good home.”
A rep for Red Lobster was eager to share the story and send the rare lobster to the Ripley's Aquarium, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.
"It is an honor to be able to share the story of Cheddar and provide her a new home where she can be enjoyed by many for years to come, all from the safety of her tank," said Nicole Bott, Senior Director, Communications at Red Lobster, in a statement.
