When it comes to snacks, there are two obvious frontrunners: Oreos and Ritz peanut butter sandwich crackers. But what if you can't decide between savory and sweet?

The snack wizards at Mondelez have a solution: Meet the Ritz x Oreo, a franken-cookie that's one half buttery Ritz cracker and one half chocolatey Oreo. Double-stuffed with both peanut butter-flavored creme and the original Oreo creme, the Ritz x Oreo looks like practical joke in cookie form. But we assure you, this is no joke.

“We couldn’t resist the opportunity to collaborate with our friends at Oreo on a snack that’s part salty cracker, part chocolate cookie, and entirely delicious," said Alexis Yap, Senior Brand Manager for Ritz. "This is a collab our fans won’t want to miss!”

The online response to the news is mixed, with many people questioning the combination.

While some fans on the Internet are skeptical about this sweet and salty pairing, Ritz x Oreo has the power of science on its side. A special receptor on our tongue called SGLT1 activates when you eat salt and sugar together, which might explain why we gravitate towards snacks like kettle corn, salted caramel, and Ritz x Oreo.

We wanted to see how this snack science works, so we got our hands on a box of Ritz x Oreo to try them out. The sweet Oreo filling was the dominant flavor while the peanut butter filling definitely took a backseat—in fact, we could barely taste it at all. The signature crumbliness of the Ritz cracker made the mash-up difficult to eat in more than one bite.

The Ritz x Oreo may have its faults, but Mondelez is definitely onto something when it comes to peanut butter mixed with Oreos. If you're craving a salty sweet pairing and you can't get your hands on this limited-edition collab, try smearing some peanut butter on a classic Oreo and you'll achieve a similar (maybe even better) result.

Starting Thursday, May 26 at noon EST, a thousand boxfuls of this ultra-limited edition release will be available online. Snag one for free (yes, they are free!) at OREO.com/RITZ, just pay $3.95 for shipping.
