If you’re a fan of ‘South Park,’ then you are familiar with the restaurant Casa Bonita. The Colorado spot has been featured in several of the show’s episodes as the creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, grew up in Denver suburbs close to where the restaurant is located and have fond memories of the establishment.
Now, ‘South Park’ fanatics have another reason to visit the place. Parker and Stone just announced they struck a deal to buy it. “We bought it,” Parker told The Hollywood Reporter. “It just feels natural.”
Summit Family Restaurants owned Casa Bonita previously and had filed for Chapter 11 protection in Arizona in April, so the final sale may take months to get approved in court. Adam Paul, the mayor of Lakewood, where the restaurant is located, told THR this move would “help save an iconic landmark” in the area. “This is a really exciting announcement not only for the community but for our entire state,” he said. “It will also provide catalytic change for an emerging arts district.”
The duo wants to make some improvements to the restaurant, though it’s unclear what they may be. Currently, the inside has an arcade, cave, and waterfall with cliff divers. It was opened in 1974 and made a historic landmark in March 2015. It closed in 2020 due to COVID-related financial issues, so it’s exciting to see the ‘South Park’ landmark being brought back to life by the creators.
There’s no official opening date for the restaurant, but hopefully we can find ourselves dining with Kyle and Kenny soon.
