Costco has begun to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to eligible people in select states as the U.S. continues to ramp up its vaccination efforts.

In an update on its COVID-19 resource page, the retailer informed customers that it would be "administering COVID-19 vaccines as soon as they are available, in accordance with CDC and state guidelines." So far, they are doing so in five states—California, New York, Oregon, South Carolina, and Washington—as well as in Puerto Rico.

As Costco notes, the United States is currently prioritizing higher-risk individuals such as healthcare workers, adults 65 and older, and other high-risk frontline workers. What qualifies you to be eligible for vaccination at this time will vary from state to state.

While Costco cautions you not to contact the local Costco pharmacy directly if you believe that you fall under the vaccine requirements, you can see if Costco is administering vaccines in your area by visiting the page here and clicking under your state. Once you click on your county or city, you'll be directed to check requirements and schedule an appointment. Just a reminder: You should only do so if you meet the requirements listed on or before the appointment page.

Costco is able to administer these vaccines as part of the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program, which partners the federal government, states and territories, and pharmacies together in an effort to expand and increase COVID-19 vaccinations across the country. This is the same program that allowed 1,000 pharmacies inside of Walmart and Sam's Club stores in 22 states to be eligible to administer the vaccine starting last week. You can see which retail partners are eligible to administer the vaccine in your state here. A final note: Additional retailers may also be able to administer the vaccine based on local guidelines and regulations.
