Update, December 11, 2020: ICYMI, last month a video with Charli and Dixie D'Amelio having a meal with James Charles (that was prepared by chef Aaron May) went viral after Dixie spit out the food prepared for them and Charli asked for chicken nuggets instead. James and Dixie have now reunited to explain what happened in their own words.
The follow-up video was posted to Dixie's YouTube account two days ago; she sat down with James as part of her "Early Late Show Starring Dixie D'Amelio" series. Right off the bat, James alluded to the drama, saying "last time we were on camera things didn't go so well." He was referring to the fact that their last video subsequently saw both sisters lose hundreds of thousands of social media followers and had fans calling them "spoiled" and "disrespectful."
Dixie and James took this new video as a chance to explain the situation a bit more with both of them saying the resulting drama was "frustrating" because it was taken out of context. "Obviously the dinner was such a good time. The food, in my opinion, was incredible," James said: "I probably have a little bit more of a vast taste palate than you and Charli maybe but that's fine because you guys are a lot younger."
Ultimately, after talking about the editing process and what goes on behind the scenes of these videos, James explained that it was only a short clip of the entire night that didn't translate well after editing: "The whole thing definitely got taken out of proportion, I can see why, however, the public's reaction turned into what it did."
Original Post, November 19, 2020: TikTok stars Charli and Dixie D'Amelio are under fire following a YouTube video that was posted on the family's YouTube channel. The video, which is the first of a series called "Dinner With The D'Amelios," featured the sisters and their parents Marc and Heidi eating a meal prepared by professional chef Aaron May. At one point, Dixie gags at the prepared food and Charli asks to eat something else.
Aaron May is a renowned chef who has been featured on shows like Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. For the video, he prepared a salad, plant-based mushroom paella, and a traditional Valencia paella that included chicken and seafood. Around six minutes into the video while guest James Charles (another YouTuber) is speaking to Charli, the camera zooms in on Dixie as she pulls a piece out of the paella on her plate with her hands.
"What is this?" she asks, and Chef Aaron explained that it was a snail. "It's classic in paella and it's actually an omen of good luck and fortune," he said.
At this point, Dixie begins to make gagging noises and then puts it in her mouth to try, as her father seemingly tells her not to. When she eats it she begins to throw up as her parents tell her to stop being "so dramatic." Eventually she excuses herself from the table to continue throwing up outside while Charli asks if they have any "dino nuggets" to eat.
The video has over 8 million views with the majority of comments calling the sisters things like "disrespectful," "brats," and "embarrassing."
Fans across platforms on Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram are also responding negatively to the video claiming both Dixie and Charli were unappreciative of the food made for them by a private chef.
Following the criticism, Dixie posted a TikTok attempting to give more context to the situation while posting screenshots of the hate messages she has been receiving.
"Before I get into anything I am so grateful for every single person that follows me and every single person I care about...because I am just so grateful for all of the opportunities I've had so I would never in any way want to be taken as disrespectful especially from an out of context 15 second clip," she said in the TikTok video:
My team knows I throw up a lot. I can throw up at the smell, the thought, or the taste of anything. So when they saw the snails they were like 'Oh, let's get her and try to see if we can get a reaction out of her,' I love chef and I would never try to disrespect him in any way and maybe don't judge someone's personality over a 15 second video.
At the time of publication Charli had yet to respond to any of the backlash, but according to BuzzFeed, she has lost over 500,000 followers (and continues to lose them) since the video was posted.
