Uber’s CEO Dara Khosrowshahi is calling out police violence and systemic racism in America as the company announces two new steps it is taking to support black restaurant owners in the food community through Uber Eats.
Now, when you open the app in a major city, you will see a prompt to "support black-owned restaurants." That will lead you to a list of restaurants you can order from through the app based on your location, according to Reuters. Additionally, a delivery fee won't be charged when you place an order to one of the restaurants through the end of 2020.
Uber thus joins many other brands who have announced efforts this week to support and uplift black-owned businesses and communities following the death of George Floyd.
“I wish that the lives of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless others weren’t so violently cut short,” Khosrowshahi wrote in an email to customers. “I wish that institutional racism, and the police violence it gives rise to, didn’t cause their deaths.”
If you're looking for more ways to do your part, we've put together a pair of lists to help you find black-owned restaurants and food services in your area, as well as to connect you with ways to feed and support Black Lives Matter protestors.
When it comes to restaurants, Delish's Kristin Salaky offers this reminder: "Once you do find places you love, tip generously, leave great reviews, tell your friends, and continue to actively support them."
