Ketchup can go on pretty much anything. We pile it on our fries, controversially use it on hot dogs, and even drizzle it on mac & cheese sometimes. But one place ketchup really shouldn't belong is in our chocolates...but no one told Heinz that.
Heinz UK announced that it had teamed up with the store Fortnum & Mason to create limited-edition "ValenHeinz" Tomato Ketchup Truffles. Yes...that's right.......ketchup chocolate truffles.
The treats are described as "tangy but smooth" which are certainly words, but neither are ones I'd want to use to describe fancy chocolates. In fact, the shop promises "you'll get the delicious taste of Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love in every bite." Yay?
Blogger Kelly Cletheroe tried them, and although she said they were not "horrific," she summed them up perfectly in one sentence on her YouTube channel: "My god, that was bizarre."
"When you sit and linger and allow that flavor, you just question why you make these kind of choices in your life, you know?" she continued.
Each box contains nine truffles which come in milk, dark, and white chocolates. The package goes for £19.95, or about $25. Only 1,000 boxes were created and, as of now, it looks like they're already sold out.
Luckily, Heinz and Fortnum & Mason are also giving a box away. Simply follow them and HeinzUK on Facebook and comment on their "Valenheinz Ketchup Chocolate Truffles" post with your favorite unusual ketchup pairing. Oh, you have to like the post, too!
So there you have it...the world is a weird, weird place.
