- Chip Gaines claimed Martha Stewart didn't recognize him or his wife Joanna at the 2019 Time 100 Gala.
- Martha is now responding to the viral story, saying she was "taken aback" about the comments.
- Don't worry—Chip had more to add after hearing her side.
Looks like our three favorite lifestyle moguls may have gotten their signals crossed.
Chip and Joanna Gaines and Martha Stewart were both lucky enough to attend the 2019 Time 100 Gala. The former Fixer Upper stars couldn’t wait to meet the DIY queen, and apparently even asked Chicago P.D. vet Sophia Bush to introduce them.
“We were so excited to meet Martha Stewart, but she didn’t have the faintest idea who we are, not a single clue,” Chip told Page Six at the time. “But we don’t mind at all, Joanna was so excited to meet Martha.”
Flash forward to January 2020, when Martha was asked about the incident on Watch What Happens Live. Her answer makes it pretty clear that she was confused about Chip’s comments.
“What was it like meeting Chip and Joanna Gaines at the Time Gala this year, and is it true that you didn’t know who they were?” a fan calling in asked Martha.
She responded, “No, it is not true and Chip made a big story about it. I knew exactly who they are. I admire them, I admire what they’ve done. I was kind of taken aback that he made up that story.”
She also added that their magazines are both published by the same company so, in her words, “C’mon” Chip!
The back-and-forth doesn’t end there. Chip got word of her interview and sent out a message to her on Twitter.
“Dear [Martha]! You inspire jo & me on SO many levels! After meeting you at time100 we went back to our table on CLOUD 9 and said to jo (JOKINGLY!) ‘I’m not sure she knows who I am.. ha!’ Someone overheard & made a (dumb) story of it – the end.”
Martha didn’t reply yet, but we’re sure these two design geniuses are both ready to put the incident in the past.
