Lil Nas X has had an absurd year. Early in 2019, say, in the first week or so of January, no one had ever heard of him. Early in 2020, in the first week or so of January, literally any0ne who's ever had eyes, ears, or internet access knows his name. It's hard to imagine the scope of his fame—and how one handles rising to that kind of fame that quickly—but the artist just gave us a glimpse into how he's doing...via two Instagram videos taken one calendar year apart, both of which feature pizza.
"These 2 videos are exactly 365 days apart, watch til the end," he captioned the videos. The first one, taken on January 8, 2019, goes like this:
Alright, um, what day is it? January the eighth, 2019. Gonna eat some fucking pizza. Just put out "Old Town Road" and...it's doing pretty fucking good. You know, right now? No matter what, [three thousand] on Instagram, [two thousand] on YouTube, not even [one thousand] followers on Spotify yet. But...I'ma hit y'all back a year from now and we'll see where I'm at. Alright.
So! One year, about 75 million streams, tens of millions of followers, and one priceless friendship with Billy Ray Cyrus later, and he's back.
Alright, um, what day is it? January eighth, 2020. I'm about to eat some fucking pizza. A year ago, I put out "Old Town Road." It did pretty fucking good. I'm at five million on Instagram, eight million on YouTube, around 30 million Spotify listeners. It's been a year, and I just want to give a big thank you to everybody who's helped me get to where I am. And I'll be back with you guys...10 years from now! We'll see where I'm at.
His trappings (and grills) (and glasses) (and—just everything, wow) are a bit different, but at the end of the day, he's still got some fucking pizza.
