If you’ve ever used a mandoline, you know it’s a super handy tool for whenever you need to thinly slice things in a hurry. But there’s also a dark side of mandoline usage: It’s incredibly easy to injure yourself while you’re doing all that speedy slicing.
Chrissy Teigen knows the deal—and she just shared her emotional (and completely hilarious) story on Instagram of both herself and her husband John Legend injuring themselves on a mandoline.
"I haven't used a mandoline for four years,” Chrissy said in the video, as dramatic music swelled in the background. “I'm getting emotional! I bought my first mandoline; I brought it home because I'm so tired of slicing mom's potatoes for her scalloped potatoes."
Then, things took an intense turn. “I have John start slicing and he does one of his like, “AHH!’ He always makes a big noise because men can’t handle pain very well,” she said. “I was like, ‘What is it?’ And he was like, ‘I cut my finger on the mandoline.’”
Chrissy said she went to her husband to investigate, and it was pretty ugly. “He sliced the entire tip off of it,” she said. “All John has is his fingers!” Cut to a shot of Legend holding a sign that says, “I am nothing without my fingers.”
“So I said, “Give me that! I’ll finish it,’” Chrissy said. Then things got even more intense: “One pass through the mandoline and I, too, cut my finger off immediately,” she said. Teigen then “broke down” into laughing/crying sobs.
“We went to the emergency room. They reattached our fingers,” she said, as the camera zoomed in on a framed photo of Teigen and Legend with bandaged-up fingers, posing with medical personnel. “Now I don’t do anything without my Kevlar gloves,” she said.
Long story long: Chrissy and her husband once cut themselves on a mandoline. But, you know, lesson learned.
Apparently Chrissy and her husband aren’t the only ones who have gone through this. “This same thing happened to me when I was pregnant. Not fun at all,” one person wrote in the comments. “I did the same thing!!!!” another said.
Oh! In case you’re wondering, you can get Kevlar gloves on Amazon for $8.99. It's the perfect last minute stocking stuffer for the mandoline-lover in your life!
