Art: Who could understand it? Certainly not I. But what I do understand is chicken sandwiches...although I guess don't get why this particular Popeyes Chicken Sandwich taped to a wall is being valued at around $120,000 all in the name of art.
If you've been on the internet this week, you'll recognize this as a play on the recent piece called "Comedian" by artist Maurizio Cattelan at Art Basel in Miami, FL. That piece went viral because it was a banana tapped to a wall and everyone was like "Why?" Two versions of the piece were reportedly sold for $120,000 each and one version was eaten at Art Basel by another artist, David Datuna, according to NBC News. Wild.
Popeyes quickly countered with its own art piece consisting of its own viral sensation: the chicken sandwich. This new piece is called “The Sandwich” and is listed at the even higher price of $120,003.99 (I'm assuming the $3.99 is an ode to how much the sandwich costs.) It is being billed as "a mixed media work of art consisting of a toasted brioche bun, two pickles, fried chicken, mayo, and duct tape on canvas." I say again: WILD.
Though I really can't understand what is going on in either of these pieces, there were reports of people going to great lengths to get their hands on a Popeyes Sandwich, so I guess paying hundreds of thousands of dollars wouldn't be too extreme.
When someone does purchase the piece, all profits from the sale will go to the Popeyes Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping communities in need with food and other resources.
You can take a peek at "The Sandwich" at San Paul Gallery Urban Art in Miami for the time being, but, according to Popeyes, one person has already inquired about buying it, so it could be gone pretttyyy soooon.
