Nowadays, you'd think that with more people skewing vegan, restaurants would have more inclusive menus. That said, a UK restaurant owned by a former MasterChef winner apparently just isn't on board with the whole veggie movement. A customer recently roasted him about his lack of meatless options on the restaurant's Facebook page and the chef had a few, um, choice words to say back.
Simon Wood, the 2015 winner of the UK's MasterChef, went in on a customer who commented on their eating experience at Wood, his restaurant in Manchester. While the comment and its response has since been deleted from the page, Insider screengrabbed the whole exchange.
The customer—whose name has been redacted—wrote on September 27: "It's embarrassing how aggressive the chef's approach to veganism is. Being very rude, and excluding a huge and growing percent of the UK isn't a great business move. Hugely disappointed."
In response, Simon took the time to reply from his personal FB account to say, "Sorry for your disappointment, d***." TBH, I didn't really think the customer's opinion and review were thaaaat bad, but hey, everyone handles criticism...differently. *Sips tea.*
A different diner left a similar comment around the same time, and that conversation ended pretty similarly. In response to the customer saying Wood "can't adapt to cook vegan food," the chef responded again, this time from the restaurant's official account:
It's not a given that I should adapt my menu to suit your preference. If you want vegan food go to a vegan restaurant....which incidentally if I went to one and asked for a steak I wouldn't get one. Nor would I expect to do so. Nor would I not recommend them for not giving me something I want. You ridiculous person.
A quick look at the page's current state reveals the restaurant (and, perhaps, the chef) have chosen to press on as though none of this happened. Everything from the past few days is either a beautiful picture of food or an announcement about restaurant hours. So maybe Simon will decide to throw some more meatless dishes on his menus for our vegan pals after this debacle? In the meantime, lets all be friends here, people.
