Controversy is nothing new for Gwyneth Paltrow and her lifestyle brand Goop, but they've gone and angered people again this week with one unfortunate Instagram: of a naked blonde woman, facing outwards into a mountain-scape, stretching up in a way that showcases her ribcage.
Commenters were quick to decry the photo, which appeared on Goop's feed to promote a recent article of theirs with psychic Dana Childs (the same photo also illustrates that interview on the main site). "Her rib cage is showing ... 😱😱😱" said one. "Your insta posts are millennial white girls and now this unrealistic body image. For claiming to be about empowering women you need a reality check and get real," said another.
Still more commenters actually seemed to think the woman in the photo was Gwyneth herself, and certainly the model seems to resemble the actress and cookbook author, though you can't see her face. Others were just annoyed that such a NSFW pic wound up on their feed.
Instagram famously does maintain strict rules about photos depicting any kind of nudity, so perhaps the most shocking aspect of the post is that it's still up. The company often swoops in to delete posts of just this nature.
In the past, Goop and Gwyneth have been fined $145,000 for promoting a story with claims about the health benefits of inserting jade eggs into one's genitals, and have been criticized for giving dangerous diet advice. On the lighter side, Goop has also been mocked for its over-the-top silly tone and recommendations, like a camel milk delivery service as a holiday gift in 2017.
