After a three-year innovation process, Pizza Hut rolled out its new and improved Original Pan Pizza recipe yesterday. The subtle updates to their OG pizza—it first debuted back in 1980—include baking it in a newly engineered pan and tweaking the sauce-to-cheese ratio.

According to a press release, the new pan "perfects the golden-brown, crispy buttery crust" while making the center even chewier. Pizza Hut also switched up the cheese recipe, switching from whole milk to part-skim mozzarella.

To celebrate the launch of the revamped pizza, the Hut added it to the Everyday Low-Price Deal for a limited time. For the non-regulars, that means you can grab a large two-topping pan pizza for $7.99 when you order it online.

The Delish team tasted the new pan pizzas and had varied opinions. For reference, we tried a plain cheese and a pepperoni. Here are some thoughts:

  • "There's less sauce than there used to be. The crust used to be much crispier."
  • "It's not as thick; I ordered the Pan pizzas because I liked the thick crispiness of it. It feels like there's more toppings and less bread."
  • "This reminds me of Jet's Pizza."
  • "I'm into Pizza Hut."
  • "It tastes more like Domino's."
  • "I liked it for the sauce. I usually dip mine in more sauce because I love Pizza Hut's sauce."
  • "It's better with more cheese. Less sauce is the move."
  • "It's like little kid pizza."

The consensus: We found it to be less crispy than before, surprisingly, and people were split on the cheese-to-sauce switch. However, the two large pies were gone in approximately six minutes, so they were definitely still enjoyed. If you want to try it for yourself, you can order the new Original Pan Pizza now at Pizza Hut's nationwide.
