South Bend, Indiana's openly gay mayor and presidential hopeful, Pete Buttigeig, has some surprising thoughts on Chick-fil-A amidst the scandal. While appearing on Angela Yee and Charlamagne Tha God's radio show, Breakfast Club, the politician admitted he's still a fan of the chicken chain despite their controversial support of anti-LGBTQ groups.
When Charlamagne broached the subject of Chick-fil-A's charitable donations—tax filings reveal they gave $1.8 million in 2017—"mayor Pete" did not hold back. "I do not approve of their politics, but I kind of approve of their chicken," he said. "So maybe if nothing else, I can build that bridge. Maybe I'll become in a position to broker that peace deal." Sounds like the kind of leader America needs. Charlamagne agreed, criticizing our current cancel culture. "We just live in this era of extremes, and people can't see the nuance in things anymore."
However, Buttigeig still wants his sandwich served with a side of justice. "Good chicken sandwiches, and good politics," he emphasized."Good politics ought to have that quality too. And I think we’ve got to get back to that before this current presidency just completely tears us apart." So, basically he wants Chick-fil-A to start behaving how their chicken tastes.
Buttigeig believes his own identity as a member of the LGBTQ community—and all of our differing identities as Americans—can ultimately bring the country together. "I have no clue what it's like to walk in the shoes of so many other people," he admits. "But I can talk about some of the pieces of what I carry with me, and see if it rhymes with your life experience. And I think good art has that, good music has that, good literature has that." And maybe...good chicken does too?
