Gwyneth Paltrow has no problem trolling herself or her infamous lifestyle company, Goop, so it was no surprise that when the founder and CEO stopped by Saturday Night Live this weekend to make audiences laugh, it was by spoofing her own company. She appeared on the "Weekend Update" segment as fictional Goop manager Fifer James, who was forced to intervene after her co-worker struggled on-air to correctly promote the brand's new products. Only problem? She too failed miserably.
Fellow staffer Baskin Johns began by nervously fumbling her way through the Body Wash ingredient list. When pressed by host Michael Che on the product's main infusion "Ashwagandha," Baskin claimed Paltrow had picked it up on a trip to the fictional Black Panther country, Wakanda.
...It was time for reinforcement. Fifer jumped in and was quick to assure the stressed employee that she would not be fired for her on-air flub. "She doesn't believe in firing. Remember? It's called 'conscious unemploying,'" she said of "queen Gwy." The comment was an obvious—and hilarious—nod to Paltrow's split announcement from ex-husband Chris Martin. In the years-old statement, she coined the now-famous phrase "conscious uncoupling."
After Gwyneth's character stepped in to review the launch of their Himalayan Salt Scrub, she too struggled to actually comment anything of substance. "It is the number one salt scrub," she began, her voice shaking. "Rated number one in overall salt." Clearly, Fifer James was as equally lost. "Actually, I'd like to tell you what salt is instead," she tried. Che was not having it and after laughing her off, she added, "so you know it's angry sugar?"
While the skit was clearly intended to poke fun at Paltrow and her brand's over-the-top reputation, the G.Day Ginger + Ashwagandha Energy Body Wash and G.Tox Himalayan Salt Scalp Scrub are real. You can buy them online and read all about their actual health benefits. Paltrow—who's currently in NYC for her Goop Health Summit—clearly has a sense of humor. And we are HERE FOR IT.
