"It's hard to be a diamond in a rhinestone world," Dolly Parton croons in her 1984 tune, "Tennessee Homesick Blues." But Dumplin', the new Netflix movie set to her songs, manages to be just that.
The delightful Dolly Parton soundtrack teased in the trailer may have hooked us. But when the movie based on Julie Murphy's young adult novel premiered, it was the inspiring story of plus-size teen Willowdean Dixon (Danielle Macdonald) and her decision to enter a beauty pageant run by her mom, Rosie (Jennifer Aniston), that made us stay. And we weren't alone: People all over social media seemed to have been touched by the uplifting film.
"A movie about a fat girl that isn’t centered around her changing her physical appearance to love herself," one viewer tweeted, adding, "[plus] drag queen fairy god mothers. A concept we approve of."
"I've listened to @DollyParton nonstop all week in preparation for the movie #Dumplin to come out today," another shared. "I couldn't wait to get home this afternoon to watch it. I was NOT disappointed! So good! I cannot wait to have Dolly parties with my niece! All young girls must see this movie!"
A third Twitter user urged followers to "go watch Dumplin'," along with a photo of Willowdean (Will for short) and best friend Ellen (Odeya Rush) wearing their "Every body is a swimsuit body" suits from a scene during the competition. "It's so heartwarming acknowledges one's insecurities, tackles body positivity well, has strong female friendships, character developments, drag queens & the romance is so cute sierra burgess & insatiable are shaking."
Bo, Will’s love interest in the film played by Luke Benward, has even achieved heartthrob status similar to that of Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) in To All the Boys I've Loved Before.
Watch it for yourself tonight—because, as Will's late aunt used to say, "Fridays don't deserve all the attention."
