Aside from being crazy delicious, Hostess treats have a certain nostalgic element to them. They're the original school lunch desserts, or the snack you bought once you got to school (and your parents couldn't object).
Now, the dessert masters that filled our childhood with everything from Twinkies to Ding Dongs have totally changed the way we enjoy Hostess sweets. Starting this winter, you will be able to eat two iconic Hostess products by the spoonful, with Honey Bun cereal and Donettes Cereal.
Post Consumer Brands, the makers of Honey Bunches of Oats and Post Pebbles, teamed with Hostess to create the dessert-inspired cereals. The Delish team had the opportunity to taste the new cereals before they hit shelves, and based on the reviews, these are sure to be a holiday hit with families.
The Donettes cereal, inspired by Hostess powdered mini donuts, are circles with a faint powdered sugar-like exterior (enough to leave some on your hands)! The Delish editors that tried the Donettes described the texture as "puffier than a Cheerio" and "crunchier than the original Donettes, but with a similar powder that stays in your mouth."
Several people commented on how well the cereal replicates the actual powdered sugar donuts. "The powdered sugar feel is there, and it lingers like when you're eating one of the donuts," one taste tester said.
The Honey Bun cereal received praise from some of the Delish team for its accurate Honey Bun shape. "I appreciate the swirl," one person said. In terms of taste, the verdict was that Honey Bun cereal is similar to, but "sweeter than Cinnamon Toast Crunch".
We tried the cereals straight from the box, but the tasters were split as to whether or not the cereals even need milk. A few argued the milk would make the Donettes more of a donut consistency, but one staffer said milk would make both cereals too sweet. One thing everyone who tried the cereals could agree on, though, is that kids will go crazy for them. How could they not? Dessert for breakfast!
The cereals will begin rolling out in select stores towards the end of December, but they'll officially be available at all major retailers and grocery stores come January 2019. Keep your eyes peeled: you might want to buy both kinds—word on the street (aka our office) is that they're realllly good mixed together!
