Christmas has arrived at the White House - the decorations and multiple trees are up, and pictures of Melania Trump wearing festive tartan have been shared.
Although this year's decorations aren't as oddly macabre as in 2017, the makeover of the East Colonnade has once again received mixed reviews on Twitter. While last year's look took on an eery aesthetic in the form of bare white branches, this year the hallway has been festooned with blood red Christmas trees shaped in sculptured cones. Each is made using scarlet berries.
Some have likened the trees to the Imperial Royal Guards from Star Wars, while others have compared them to the lead characters in The Handmaid's Tale. A number of social media users also highlight the similarities to car wash wipers.
The theme of the 2018 decorations is 'American Treasures' and is intended to celebrate US heritage. Dozens of trees and more than 14 thousand ornaments decorate the White House for the holiday season; over 30,000 visitors are expected to participate in public tours throughout the month of December.
Elsewhere in the White House, the festive decor takes more of a traditional feel.
Melania Trump shared a photo of herself supposedly decorating the tree, inexplicably wearing red leather gloves.
“This is a joyous time of year when we decorate the White House for the Christmas season,” the First Lady said in a statement. “Our theme honours the heart and spirit of the American people."
“Thank you to the many volunteers and staff who worked hard to decorate the halls of the People’s House in Christmas cheer. On behalf of my family, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
