Matthew surprised firefighters, 911 dispatchers, emergency room doctors and nurses, and police officers on Sunday, which was National First Responders Day. He also met with Houston’s mayor, Sylvester Turner, who gave him a shoutout on Twitter for his good deeds.

This year, Matthew surprised first responders who took action last year during Hurricane Harvey in Texas. Wild Turkey has also donated $10,000 to Team Rubicon, a disaster response organization that trains military veterans and first responders and sends them to areas in need. “I’m Texas born and raised, so acknowledging the hard work and dedication of first responders in Houston is meaningful to me personally,” Matthew said in a statement. “Over the past year alone with the hurricanes in Puerto Rico, the Carolinas and Florida and the fires in California, the number of heroic men and women on the front lines of natural disasters is staggering.”

He also posted two live videos from the event, in which he talked about the importance of first responders. “Today’s about saying thank you to these people that were all on the front line, and got out there to rescue people first,” he said in a video.
