Costco is opening up a gigantic, $275 million poultry-processing center in Fremont, NE, Business Insider reports. The factory, which will likely open late next year, is meant to ensure the company will continue being able to produce their famous rotisserie chicken for just $4.99.
According to FoodProcessing, Costco began work on the factory last year. The grounds are 380,000 square feet and 414 acres. Vice president and general merchandising manager Craig Wilson told the Food Safety Summit in May the facility would be capable of producing 2 million rotisserie chickens each week. Per Fox News, Costco sells about 60 million rotisserie chickens a year.
All of this is not only to assure you get your chicken at the price you've been getting it, but also that Costco can afford to keep giving it to you that way.
"We were willing to eat, if you will, $30 to $40 million a year in gross margin by keeping it at $4.99," Costco's chief financial officer Richard Galanti told the Seattle Times back in 2015: “That’s what we do for a living.”
One less thing to worry about then.
