Remember this summer, when McDonald's added Frozen Cold Brew to the menu for a limited time? People were pretty stoked, calling it "better than anything Starbucks has ever come up with" and "everything I’ve ever wanted in a coffee." That's some high praise.
But, if you care even a little bit about your coffee not being a total sugar bomb, McD's caffeinated drink probably wasn't up your alley, nor something you'd order regularly. You may, however, be interested to hear about the latest beverage on the McCafé menu. This week, the fast food chain announced it's testing two cold brew drinks at more than 70 San Diego locations. Spoiler alert: You can now get your cold brew black!
The new McCafé Cold Brew Coffee that's in testing can be ordered with or without cream and sugar and can be customized with French vanilla, caramel or hazelnut flavors. A medium black cold brew has 10 calories, 2 grams of carbs, and 0 grams of fat or sugar. Its ingredient list: water and coffee served over ice (but not iced coffee ice, which we would wholeheartedly support, and even have a recipe for).
If you're not into plain black coffee, McDonald’s is also testing a McCafé Marble Cold Brew, which adds in sweet creamy syrup and splashes of light cream. A medium drink has 120 calories, 24 grams of carbs, 2 grams of fat and 20 grams of sugar. Both drinks are made with Arabica coffee beans sourced from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in Guatemala.
San Diego was chosen as the testing location in part because of the city's coffee culture, McDonald's franchise owner Jamie Straza said in a press release. They were the first city to test All-Day Breakfast, which went well, so here's hoping cold brew follows suit!
