Subway recently ceased its famous $5 footlong deal (RIP), which upset fans of the sandwich chain. Now, people are irritated again—this time, due to Subway's #SubTheBurger campaign. In particular, the campaign includes a commercial in which Subway attempts to slam McDonald's.
The commercial shows what appears to be a heart rate in the shape of the golden arches, and a super annoying, high-pitched voice repeating "Burger. Burger. Burger. Burger..." over and over, faster and annoyingly faster, until the McDonald's logo "flatlines."
"Is your burger routine feeling a little flat?" the commercial asks.
Well, Subway has the answer:
Unfortunately, the commercial isn't quite inspiring folks to #SubTheBurger.
One Twitter user thought the commercial was for McDonald's, and was actually inspired to order a burger.
So I'd say that's pretty much exactly the opposite of what Subway was going for.
Many tweeted about how the commercial actually makes them want to eat McDonald's, and not Subway (perhaps out of annoyance)?
Chris Carroll, Subway's chief advertising officer, told Business Insider, "The goal of this ad campaign is to get people to step out of their routines and try something new. The ad campaign invites consumers to experience all the changes we're making in our restaurants, from our service to new menu items and the look of our restaurants."
Check out the commercial for yourself, and decide if you're inspired to #SubTheBurger:
