McDonald's apple pies first showed up on the fast-food chain's menu in 1968. And a recent change to the beloved dessert has nostalgic fans ready to riot. The company has announced that they are revamping the apple pie recipe in an effort to make it healthier. As Insider reports, the new recipe will feature less sugar, and the apple pie will be made with fewer ingredients overall.

"Our new freshly baked apple pie recipe is in line with other positive changes we have made," Tiffany Briggs, a McDonald's spokesperson, said in a statement. "We removed, for example, artificial preservatives from our Chicken McNuggets and switched to real butter in our breakfast sandwiches because those changes matter to our guests."

One of the main changes to the apple pie is the crust, as the new recipe features a latticed crust with a sugar topping, rather than the sugar and cinnamon topping that customers are used to.

The healthier change has some fans fuming. And naturally, they're using social media to express their frustration.

McDonald's is well aware of the backlash, though, and when one Twitter user said that they "like the old recipe better," the company responded. "Our new apple pie is made with fewer ingredients such as sugar, sliced 100-percent American grown apples and a bit of cinnamon to the filling for flavor to give each one that homemade taste our customers love."

However, many people may not be aware that isn't the first time the apple pie recipe was changed. As Eater reports, in 1992 McDonald's stopped frying their pies, and instead started selling a baked version.
