New Yorkers could soon have one less line to worry about while running errands. Per Reuters, the company announced plans to open an Amazon Go grocery store in New York, giving shoppers the same checkout-free experience currently only available in Seattle.
When entering the grocery stores, shoppers scan their phone using the Amazon Go app, which has a credit card on file. As you shop, cameras and motion sensors track what you pick up from (and put back on) shelves. Besides a considerably smaller on-the-floor staff, these stores have something else missing, too: grocery carts or baskets. Another reason to stock on reusable totes.
While there's no word yet on when this store will open, Amazon is currently hiring a store manager, assistant store manager, and training lead associate for the New York area store. There will also be associates working in the kitchen and around the store prepping ingredients, making food, stocking shelves, and helping customers.
Per the job descriptions, the store will sell ready-to-eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options made by Amazon chefs and local kitchens and bakeries. Grocery essentials include staples like bread, milk, artisan cheeses and locally-made chocolates.
Not based in New York? Three more grocery stores are planned in Chicago and San Francisco. And since opening the very first Amazon Go in January, Seattle is now home to two more such stores. The future is coming!
