Over the past few months, the amount of people you know who've gone keto has likely gone up a few hundred percent. And while they may tell you all is well and good and that going all in on keto was the best decision they ever made, the diet is not without consequence. One of many participants' main complaints? Diarrhea.
Yes. According to Women's Health, the low-carb, high-fat diet is responsible for an uptick in diarrhea. Barbie Boules, an R.D.N., told the site that's probably because some people don't digest fat as well as they should ... and the keto diet is overwhelmingly fat-forward.
That unabsorbed fat then needs to be flushed, resulting in ... looser stool. Though the diarrhea might resolve itself in a few weeks when your body adjusts to its new constant state of ketosis, Boules encourages people to make an extra effort to stay hydrated. It's also important to increase your fiber intake.
Regardless, you should always consult your healthcare professional before making any drastic changes to your diet, keto or not. If diarrhea persists, checking in with them again is never a bad idea either.
