Carrie Underwood's new album, due in September, comes after an emotional year. Last November, she fell while walking her dogs, leaving her with a scar from her lip to her nose, a result of having to get 40+ stitches in her face.

She didn't return to the stage until April at the Academy of Country Music Awards, where she performed her new single, "Cry Pretty," for the first time. Her hiatus sparked all sorts of rumors, with some calling the injury a "publicity stunt" or even wondering if the singer had plastic surgery.

In a recent interview with Redbook, the country star finally responded to the speculations and opened up about her "emotional roller coaster" of a year.

"I'm on some magazine every other week for something crazy. It's a little sad, because the truth is just as interesting," the singer told the publication. "I wish I'd gotten some awesome plastic surgery to make this [scar] look better. But I try not to worry too much about it."

"My mom will be like, 'Did you see they are saying this about you?'" Carrie continued. "And I'll be like, 'Mama, I don't care. I'm just trying to raise my son and live my life.'"

"I'm just trying to raise my son and live my life."

During her brief break from the spotlight, she had plenty of time to focus on her 3-year old with husband Mike Fisher—as well as do some "soul-searching."

"There were some personal things that happened," Carrie explained. "And I had the accident and all of that to get through ... and just life. Life is full of ups and downs, and I might have had a few more downs than ups last year."

Things are certainly looking "up" for the seven-time Grammy Award-winner now. Not only is her upcoming album "much more me" than her previous works, but it will mark her first time co-producing. In November, she and Brad Paisley will return to host the 2018 Country Music Awards for the 11th year in a row. And of course, there's her beautiful family of three.

As for whether or not they'll expand it? "I'm 35, so we may have missed our chance to have a big family," Carrie said, adding that she and Mike have discussed adoption.
