Amazon has been doing some major things lately, like extending Prime membership benefits to their Whole Foods locations and launching a new service that allows delivery people access the inside of your car to drop off packages. And now, the online retail giant is expanding its network of package delivery couriers by allowing the couriers to run their own delivery networks.
According to Business Insider, Amazon will offer incentives to whoever wants to run a courier business delivering packages for their new program, Delivery Service Partners. Those incentives include discounts on Amazon-branded vehicles customized for delivery, branded uniforms, a fuel program, and comprehensive insurance coverage.
Delivery partners who are accepted into the program could earn about $300,000 in annual profits operating a fleet of up to 40 delivery vehicles.
To start, you need a minimum investment of $10,000, and the company said that anyone who is interested in applying for the program doesn't need to have any experience in delivery and logistics.
Amazon also said it plans to eventually hire hundreds of business owners, who would employ tens of thousands of drivers across the U.S.
Amazon already works with hundreds of third-party courier companies that hire and manage their own fleets of drivers, but they did not disclose to Business Insider's whether its relationship with its current delivery service providers would change. However, an Amazon SVP told CNBC that this new program shouldn't damage the company's relationship with core providers.
