ALDI has been killing the cheap alcohol game. It's whiskey ($17) and gin ($13) have both previously won best in the world in their respective categories, and now the German supermarket chain has earned another win. At the International Wine and Spirits Challenge, ALDI's Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut was crowned one of the world’s best Champagnes. Another bottle took home an award, too.
The affordable bottle, which received a Silver Outstanding medal, will only cost you $14.50 a piece. Veuve Monsigny Champagne Brut is made by Philizot & Fils, a world-renowned Champagne house that ALDI has teamed up with.
Inexpensive bubbly is usually a pretty tricky beast. Apart from the crippling headache you're guaranteed to have the next day, it normally has a pretty sour flavor and terrible after taste, too. If you know, you know.
Decanter magazine says the winning bottle boasts "baked apple, brioche, and peach flavors, with decent acidity and creamy weight thanks to extended aging before release."
ALDI's Crémant Du Jura 2015 ($10.50) also took home a silver medal in its category. Judges complimented for its crisp taste. Keep your eyes peeled for both on shelves now.
