An avocado landed Joy Behar in the hospital — because she stabbed herself trying to open it up. On Tuesday’s episode of The View, the cohost explained she was absent from the show because she was recovering from her injury.

“Saturday night, on my way to an event at [a] retreat, I stabbed myself in the hand with a knife. I was trying to desperately eat something, so I was trying to open up an avocado,” she said. “And I stuck the knife into the pit to get it out, and I stabbed myself.” She ended up in the hospital overnight to combat an infection, but is doing fine now.

Behar talked about the injury because she learned it was common — so common that it has a nickname, “avocado hand.” Last year, the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons even sent out a public warning of the hazards of using a knife to cut an avocado.

“Well, I never had pain quite so intense, it was awful,” Behar said. “And the doctor said, ‘Oh, we get this all the time.’ [It happens with] bagels also. So any time you’re holding the item and you try to cut it, you can get this.”

She isn’t the first celebrity to be hospitalized with “avocado hand.” Meryl Streep cut her hand back in 2012 thanks to an avocado.

And former Bachelorette Andi Dorfman had surgery just a week ago after a similar kitchen accident.

As for Behar, she has learned an important lesson from her injury: she’ll use a spoon next time, if there is a next time. “I was thinking I’m going to leave the dicing to Rachael Ray, and I’m only going to buy ready-made guacamole,” she joked.
