In Japan, Kit Kats flavors are as plentiful as Oreos in a U.S. grocery store. That’s to say, there are about a zillion to choose from, with some that sound amazing and others that are downright strange (looking at you, apple). A Delish video editor recently came back from a trip to Japan with bags on bags of Kit Kats in flavors that go way beyond milk chocolate and white chocolate. We’re talking matcha, wasabi, buckwheat, and sake. Here are our favorites — and a few we could probably do without.
Banana
There was some definite divisiveness here, but for those that love that artificial banana taste (think Runts!), these were great. As one editor put it, "I could eat fake banana all day."
Raspberry Almond Matcha
There were four different matcha flavors to try, and they all tasted slightly different. The crowd favorite stood out for its chewy texture and trail mix-like toppings — there were actual dried raspberry, cranberry, and nut pieces on top. Plus, each stick was wrapped individually, making them look “classy as hell,” in our social media editor's words.
Wasabi
Wasabi Kit Kats obviously have a shock factor, but they’re actually pretty decent, especially since they don’t have the heat of actual wasabi. They won't clear out your sinuses, but they will make you feel like you're eating sushi and dessert at the same time.
Taro
If taro is your go-to bubble tea order, you’ll be a fan of these purple sweet potato-like taro root bars. Some people got a berry taste, others couldn't decipher what it was but did think it tasted "f*cking amazing." IMO, they taste like the milk left over when you eat Special K Fruit and Yogurt cereal.
Dark Chocolate
Chalk these up to being creatures of habit, but the bag of extra dark chocolate bars was easily the first emptied. The chocolate is way more intense than your typical dark chocolate bar, but surprisingly doesn't have a bitterness to it. Nestlé, please bring these to the U.S.
And the weirdest?
Apple
You’d think Apple would be a hit. After all, caramel apples are great, right? But the chocolate-coated apple bars tasted too much like perfumey apple juice, and it didn't mesh well with the layer of chocolate. Suffice it to say, these were not a crowd pleaser.
Roasted Green Tea Leaves
Called uji hojicha, this green tea-leaf flavor did not go over well with the majority of tasters. Responses ranged from "tastes like crickets" to "looks like diarrhea." Yikes. If you're gonna go green tea, you're probably better off with one of the many matcha varieties.
Sake
Also a contentious one, most people were not a fan of the booze-scented Sake flavor, but for a surprising array of reasons. It either tasted not enough like sake, more like cheap vodka, or too much like white chocolate. One editor was a fan, and thought it tasted sweeter and milder than actual sake.
Sadly, none of these treats are available in the U.S. right now, but if you find yourself in Japan, it's only right to go taste-test crazy.
