Sometimes you've just got to have a burger, and you've got to have it now. Enter: fast food restaurants.

Their popularity is undeniable; their nutritional value, not so much. But according to Rachel Kelly, author of The Happiness Diet which is released later this year, eating fast food can actually have a negative impact on your emotions.

Sharing her expertise with Business Insider, Rachel noted that the portion of fries you'd typically order along with your burger or nuggets is very rich in trans fats. Trans fats upset the balance of omega-3 fatty acids in the body, and research suggests that having low levels of these can lead to a generally terrible mood.

Pessimism, depression, and aggression are all repercussions of having a lack of omega-3 fatty acids, according to Rachel.

And it's not just the food you eat at your local fast food joint that's likely to cause your mood to crash. If you're a fan of diet fizzy drinks, these could cause your mood to plummet, too.

Diet drinks contain the artificial sweetener Aspartame in place of sugar, however scientific studies suggest that an amino acid contained in Aspartame has the power to slow down your body's production of serotonin, which regulates your mood. Less serotonin = less happy vibes. Cheers, diet drinks.

So basically, eat fast food all you want. But be prepared for the comedown afterwards.
