In proof that some people are shallow, cruel, and generally awful, after three months of dating, the boyfriend of Shelby Johnson, 23, dumped her in a text message. The reason? Because "your gut might stick out more than mine, and that's just weird," he wrote, rationalising this sentiment by noting that he'd previously told her to lose weight.
Deflated, Shelby — a student at Portland State University — took a screenshot of the exchange and a selfie of herself, then asked the Internet whether her response was warranted in a March 29 tweet, that's since gone viral with 5,800 retweets, 6,000 comments, and 41,000 likes:
"You're definitely getting a beer gut babe," he concludes.
Shelby wasn't here for the abuse — particularly since she struggled to gain weight in high school up until she was 20. "I never felt happier and more healthy. I worked hard for this body," she tweeted.
In response to the fiasco, Twitter came to the rescue with relationship advice:
On March 31, with advice from her therapist, friends, and the Internet's support, according to a tweet, Shelby cut things off in person with her now-ex: "He felt like shit, especially after knowing my tweet went viral. He has told me he'll use this as a learning experience to be a better person," she tweeted.
Although she didn't reveal her ex's name to protect his privacy, Shelby did post one of his last text messages: "The Internet helped me realise how bloated I was," he wrote.
