Grace Goldstein found a very unwelcome surprise when she got home from her shopping trip to Trader Joe's on Tuesday. The Washington, D.C. resident discovered that her bag of kale had a very dead, very gross lizard inside.
When she found the reptile, she was in total shock. “It was a back and forth between denial and horror, which amounted to a lot of asking my boyfriend to see the bag of kale and identify the lizard and shrieking and pushing it away and refusing to go near it…and then asking to see it again,” she told People.
She didn't know what to do with the bag or the lizard inside, so she put it in her fridge temporarily to "preserve it." “We had reached out to TJ corporate and weren’t sure if we were also going to bring it back to the local store where we bought it and didn’t want a decomposing lizard in the fridge,” Goldstein said. “It’s a little too close to my late night ice cream for comfort.”
Goldstein's friend tweeted an image of the bag, and people started replying with their own Trader Joe's horror stories. One girl said she found a "2 feet long" piece of hair in a Trader Joe's ice cream sandwich.
A spokesperson for the company told People that they're investigating Goldstein's complaint. "We are committed to providing customers with great products of the highest quality and are currently working with our vendor to look into and address the matter,” they said.
