If half — okay, three-fourths — the appeal of running a marathon is the chance to carbo-load beforehand, your solemates await you. Saucony designs a pair of custom running shoes for the Boston marathon every year, and the 2018 edition is devoted to Dunkin' Donuts.
It's a fitting pairing, considering the breakfast chain's headquarters is in Massachusetts's capital, and that running app Strava found "coffee" was the most-mentioned food people listed in the app last year. (Similarly, donuts came in at No. 6.)
The black and white sneakers have a Dunkin'-meets-Homer-Simpson vibe, with pink-frosted donuts on the heels and sprinkles speckling the back of each shoe. Dunkin's DD logo is prominently displayed on the tongues, and the soles are splashed with a print of a cup of coffee — iced and hot, so both preferences are represented. There was no phoning it in on Saucony's part: "Boston" is written on the side of the shoe in the Dunkin' font, and a tiny reflective strip on the heel reads "America runs on Dunkin'," turning the slogan into its own play on words.
Even the box is styled to look like a box of donuts, reminding you of what you're running for: A pile of carbs and sugar at the finish line. Or, if you're running the Boston marathon, every mile or so. Saucony said one of its athletes, Tim Ritchie, counted the number of Dunkin's along the Boston marathon course that'd make for convenient snack detours — and came up with a whopping 18. If you had any doubts of how much that city loves the donut chain, just remember that number. And every meme that goes along with it.
The shoes are sold on saucony.com, and each pair will set you back roughly the cost of 11 dozen donuts ($110, for those who aren't ruled by dessert).
