canned wine

What if instead of uncorking a whole bottle of wine, you could simply pop open an individual can just like a beer or a soda? While it doesn't necessarily sound as glamorous, canned wine has arrived and could mean a whole new way of enjoying the typically bottled alcohol. According to Fast Company, Oregon wine producer Union Wine Company is offering an Underwood Pinor Noir and Pinot Gris in individual 12-ounce cans for five bucks each.

The packaging change saves the company 40% on bottling costs and will ultimately save the consumer as well. But, for Union Wine Company, the shift was also about making wine-drinking more relaxed. "We wanted to come up with a product that embodied our company's philosophy of making great craft wine minus all the fuss. There is a 'winification' of beer trend going on and Union Wine Co. is at the forefront of a new trend, the 'beerification' of wine," stated Ryan Harms, owner of Union Wine Company.

There's no word yet on how this will affect the flavor and overall aging process of the wine, but perhaps that's not the point with a laid-back can of red or white.

Several other companies, like Barokes Wine in a Can and
Friends Fun Wine in a Can, are also offering wine in aluminum can packaging. And other than the drinking vessel, all three variations have one thing in common — they all seem focused on appealing to a younger crowd.
