As food editors, we came up with this inedible (but beautiful) “recipe” first and foremost because it’s insanely popular. (The most popular Youtube video has 38 MILLION VIEWS.) All the parents on our team were desperate to know how to make it, and we got sick of them asking and us not knowing. Second, it’s fun as heck. Especially for the little ones, but even for you. Seeing food coloring swirl into glue is surprisingly therapeutic. And third, because you’re likely to make this in the kitchen and that, our friends, is definitely our domain.
What to remember:
1. Food coloring + kids = mess.
It's best to do this on a plastic tablecloth, placemat, or cutting board. You don't want this stuff to dry on your nice rustic farm table.
2. It's NOT edible.
Make sure you and your kids are washing your hands often while you make and play with slime.
3. This recipe is safe!
Though you can't eat it, you can feel good about your kids playing with it. Many other recipes call for borax, a powdery mineral used in many detergents and cosmetics. Exposure to it can cause eye irritation and skin rashes, and it also might cause hormone problems. Sooooo just avoid it. Baking soda + contact solution is wayyy more chill.
