These days, your child's first birthday party isn't actually a birthday party if there's not a smash cake involved. The smash cake trend has become a tradition in its own right over the past few years, and if you haven't considered trying to make one by now, you definitely should. Though it's not clear how or where the idea originated, smash cakes are normally made for babies on their first birthday. They're typically created for the purpose of giving your baby his or her first taste of sugar.

This short video from expert cake baker, Chelsweets, demonstrates how to make and decorate three different smash cakes for your little ones. If you were to make one of these on your own, you could use any type of batter or cake flavor that you please, just be aware of the amount of sugar lurking in boxed cake mixes. To keep the sugar levels low, Chelsweets uses a banana layer cake with peanut butter filling in between each layer.

Of course, if cake-decorating isn't your forte then you can always ask your local bakery to custom make a smash cake for you. Whatever your preference may be, your little will definitely be satisfied.
