What is Tonga Toast? A good amount of the Delish team didn't know. Those that did, however, were extremely passionate about the subject. Essentially, it's a HUGE slice of French toast that's stuffed with bananas, deep-fried, tossed in cinnamon-sugar, and served with strawberry compote, i.e heaven.

Here's the thing though. You don't need to fly to the Disney World to enjoy it. You can easily make it yourself, without Mickey and sans deep-fryer.

To start, you'll need a white unsliced loaf. Brioche works great, but Pullman is also a good choice. And just like traditional French toast, day-old stale bread is better. First, cut the loaf into very thick (about 3"!) slices. Then use a paring knife to make a slit in the center of a slice and stuff the bread with bananas. Toss the stuffed slices in a cinnamony mixture of milk and eggs and you're ready to fry!

To make things easier, we shallow-fried and were very pleased with crispy, golden results. There's still a good amount of oil involved so you'll likely want to drain the cooked slices on a wire rack before tossing them in cinnamon-sugar.

At this point you'll be very anxious to dig in. But, the Disney way to eat Tonga Toast is with strawberry compote. Thankfully, it's ridiculously easy to make at home. Simply cook down strawberries with some sugar in a saucepan until it's reduced and syrupy. It's a small step that elevates this breakfast (or should we say dessert?) to a whole other level.
