It seemed too good to be true, like finding a $20 bill on the street (that isn't a Spencers gag) or trying low-calorie ice cream that actually tastes good. That's why, the second editor Joanna Saltz said you could make perfectly swirled rainbow frosting using a bunch of resealable plastic bags and some Saran wrap, we called BS. And had to try it, ASAP.
The concept was simple: Make one giant batch of buttercream frosting — we love this simple-yet-delish recipe — divide it into bowls, and use food coloring to tint it five different shades. Pour each color into a different sandwich bag, seal it, and snip off a corner.
Then put a piece of plastic wrap on the table and pipe a fat row of each color (about half an inch thick), with each row of frosting touching each other.

Now you're ready to channel your former preschool self and roll the frosting into a log like it's a Play-Doh snake. Seriously, that's all you do. Twist the ends and snip one off, then stick the whole roll into a piping bag. We used a star-shaped piping tip, but you can use whatever you feel like. The larger the tip, the better, since you want all five colors to squeeze through at once. (We chose a Wilton size 3.)
It's that easy. Promise.

Of course, if you're topping your treats with a rainbow swirl, you can't go for plain old vanilla cake. That's like building a snack stadium and only making it one tier tall — go big or go home. Or, in this case, go double rainbow all the way.
The process couldn't be simpler: Use white cake batter (box mix or homemade), divide it into five bowls, and add a few drops of food coloring to tint them rainbow colors. Add a spoonful of each color to each cup of a muffin tin, and use a toothpick to gently swirl them together.
Bake, frost, and watch people lose their minds faster than the Double Rainbow guy on YouTube. Their reactions alone will make it worth the effort. Trust.
