I count myself firmly in the camp of people who love the '90s. I watched Full House every day, rocked Jincos unapologetically, had a Skippit, and lost my mind over Smuckers and Lisa Frank. And one of my favorites '90s memories still is that sweet time after school when I'd settle down with my snack. Some days, it was Totino's Pizza Rolls; others, it was Fruit Roll Ups. I had a heavy Little Debbie phase (and as such loved these 90s-inspired donuts), but if you ask me, the ultimate after school snack of the '90s was, far and away, Dunkaroos.
I'm always looking for ways to bring back the '90s (hello, Fun Dip Shots!), especially when it comes to nostalgic snacks. So when it came time to whip up a new batch of throwback treats, I knew it had to be these Dunkaroo Cupcakes.
Some say it's the cinnamon in the batter, and others, the homemade funfetti icing, that give these cupcakes that classic Dunkaroo flavor, but if you ask us, the secret is in the nostalgia. Play some Ace of Base while you bake and you'll be making your way down '90s memory lane in no time.
As you fellow '90s lovers probably already know, Dunkaroos can be pretty tough to find. You CAN buy them on Amazon, but we made it even easier with a hack that perfectly captures that classic Dunkaroo taste—Birthday Cake Teddy Grahams! The cake batter flavor offers the perfect nod to the rich, fluffy Dunkaroo icing you know and love, and sprinkles mixed in help nail the Dunkaroo look, too! Can't find Birthday Cake Teddy Grahams? Regular Grahams will work, too.
A couple things to note here: though small, the extra dash of cinnamon is a powerful addition to the batter. If you really wanted to get fancy, you could crush up a few Grahams, too, and add 'em to the tops of the cupcakes. But we're purists, and thought these cute little bears looked (and tasted!) good enough on their own. And if you want to keep re-living the '90s, you'll want to check out this Dunkaroo No-Churn Ice Cream, too.
