When McDonald's introduced two new Big Macs — one XL, one XS — and wound up trending on Facebook for days, it proved that while the sandwich itself hasn't changed much in years (size aside), people's love for it hasn't faded one bit. And that people really, really like portion control.
That got us thinking: What if we paid homage to the burger and its spinoffs with one Mega Mac that could be easily broken up into smaller snacks? Pull-apart sliders are a huge Pinterest trend, and their brilliance is in their simplicity. You make one tray full of sandwiches, cook it all at once, and you can feed a crowd. The pull-apart trick could absolutely apply to Big Macs, too.
Instead of making 24 burger patties — or trying to flip two placemat-sized burgers on a grill (what frying pan could contain such a thing?!) — we filled a baking sheet that was roughly twice the size of a package of slider rolls with a thin, even layer of meat, cooking it until it had browned. The meat will shrink, but that's okay. Just make sure you drain off any excess grease before topping it with a layer of American cheese and putting it in the oven just long enough to melt.
While that cooks, take a package of tear-apart slider rolls, and without breaking them apart, used a long serrated knife to carefully cut the rolls into three layers, for the three buns. With a little melted butter, some sesame seeds and a quick toasting in the oven, they're good to go.
The most important part, however, is the special sauce. If you want a "close enough" shortcut, you can go with Thousand Island. However, since one of Mickey D's chefs explained exactly what's in the sauce, we did some testing and came up with our own mix. (Or you could drop $10K and pick up a bottle of McDonald's-approved sauce on eBay, if you're from the "What's money? I burn twenties just to watch that paper sizzle!" school of thought.)
Pile on the lettuce, onions and pickles, and you have a crowd-pleasing meal that's sure to win over any party.
