We could all use a little more cinnamon swirl in our lives. You know you love it. But my bet is that you don't treat yourself nearly enough. I personally found buying a whole loaf hard to justify. A buttered cinnamon slice makes the best toast, sure, but that's about all I knew it to be good for. (I'd never use the swirled bread for a turkey sandwich or grilled cheese, for example.) But this french toast casserole changes everything. You can use the whole damn loaf for one amazing recipe.
If you've never made a French toast casserole, here's why you should:
- Baking one big batch beats frying a dozen slices of bread.
- All the brunchers get warm slices.
- You can assemble it the night before!
Now imagine a pan of baked French toast made out of cinnamon swirl bread. Once the glorious idea is on your mind, it's hard to shake. I can practically smell the cinnamon-sugar just talking about it.
The swirled bread literally reaches new heights soaked in the vanilla custard. It puffs in the oven like a soufflé, so you're fancy without even trying. I didn't need to make a streusel topping—the casserole is decadent enough in itself. But then, going over the top has never been a concern here at Delish. Why start now?
