Nothing about this mash-up makes sense—at first glance. A classic breakfast food, paired with a classic ballpark frank? It seems so wrong, until you try it. And then, like the great Sir Mix-a-Lot, you'll be hooked and you can't stop staring. Only instead of gawking at derrieres, you'll be daydreaming of...everything bagel hot dogs. Seriously.
This dish pairs two iconic New York foods—the everything bagel and the hot dog—creating a salty, savory treat that could really work as an anytime meal (Breakfast, lunch, dinner, second dinner; you name it), or as a great party appetizer. They seem labor intensive and fancy, but if you can make pigs in a blanket, you can easily make these.
It's really as simple as cutting 1-inch strips of puff pastry, brushing them with whipped cream cheese, and wrapping it around a hot dog to cover it. (Pro tip: Let the puff pastry and whipped cream sit out for about 20 minutes beforehand. It will make both much easier to work with.)
Dipping the wrapped dogs in a mixture of warm water and baking soda seems odd, but that's what gives the dough a crisped, golden brown exterior—and it helps the everything bagel seasoning stick. Sprinkle it on, bake, and you've got a snack people will trample their friends to grab. Even people who swear they don't eat hot dogs will make an exception. Then beg you to bring it to every party for the foreseeable future. They're that good.
