The Bloomin' Onion is a cult favorite and for good reason. We opted to bake instead of fry for a slightly healthier approach. It still has everything you love with the favorite, especially the sauce. We recommend buying the biggest onions you can find. It will make separating the layers easier and give you more shareable goodness. When pulling the slices apart don't fret too much if some fall out. Just roast them alongside the onion (or stick them back in!), it's how we got the idea for Bloomin' Onion Bites!
Ingredients
For The Onion
- 1
large yellow onion
- 3
large eggs
- 1 cup
bread crumbs
- 2 tsp.
paprika
- 1 tsp.
garlic powder
- 1 tsp.
onion powder
Kosher salt
For Outback's Secret Sauce
- 2/3 cup
mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp.
ketchup
- 1 tsp.
horseradish
- 1/2 tsp.
paprika
- 1/2 tsp.
garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp.
dried oregano
Kosher salt
Directions
- Step 1Preheat oven to 400° and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice off onion stem and set onion on flat side. Cut an inch from the root down, into 12 to 16 sections, being careful not to cut all the way through. Flip over and gently pull out sections of onion to separate petals.
- Step 2In a shallow bowl, whisk together eggs and 1 tablespoon water. In another shallow bowl, whisk together bread crumbs and spices and season with salt. Dip onion into egg wash, then dredge in bread crumb mixture, using a spoon to fully coat.
- Step 3Set onion on prepared baking sheet and bake until golden and tender, 18 to 20 minutes.
- Step 4Meanwhile make sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, garlic powder, and dried oregano. Season with salt.
- Step 5Serve onion with Outback’s Secret Sauce.
